Summary
“When you are powerless / To sand-bag this Atlantic bulwark, faced / By the earth-shaker, green, unwearied, chaste / In his steel scales: ask for no Orphean lute / To pluck life back.”
After the end of everything, Hark returns to his old, familiar job at Sanctuary. Life, however, does not return to normal.
It begins with small things—things far too small to notice. Open windows that ought to be closed, doors that slam themselves shut, objects in the wrong places. Coincidences.
It becomes something far worse.

Summary
In the wake of the Quenya ban, a diplomatic mission to Doriath is arranged under cloak of secrecy. Two kings in Beleriand, one new and one old, have a volatile encounter.
~~~
Thingol, shocked, drew in a sudden breath through tight-clenched teeth. “He is the very image of Finwë!”
“I warned you of that earlier,” said Galadriel quietly, her smile returning. “The resemblance never failed to madden Fëanor, by the way.”
Sympathy for mad, dead Fëanor was not what he expected to feel today, but he felt it nonetheless. A beloved memory from a life long before the sun now rode into his kingdom under plain daylight. His mind whirled. He could not reconcile it.
Bookmarker's Notes
By the sound of rustling robes, he could tell Fingolfin had stood up again, and anticipated a fare well.
“Perhaps we will play one little game,” Fingolfin said instead.
Thingol turned to face him.
He was still smiling. The vivid gentian flower in his hair suited him better than any sapphire. “Kiss me,” he said in Quenya.
Summary
Finrod and Fingolfin, an Age after their deaths, look back on their assorted triumphs and tragedies, compare cairn locations, mourn the kingdoms of Men they raised up in Beleriand, and conspire around a novelty cake.
“I came to terms with my own betrayal a while ago,” said Finrod. “If you’re correct, it was only the minor refrain of a long-running and very disappointing theme.”
“I don’t mean to open old wounds,” said Ñolofinwë. “Although I suppose we’ve been doing little else since I sat down in this chair. It’s a very comfortable chair, at least.”
Summary
In a ruined city, there stands a beautiful palace, and in this beautiful palace, there abides a kind god.
This kind god has a wondrous set of rooms that he has gifted to his beloved, and in the wondrous rooms that he has gifted to his beloved, there is a set of books - books, it seems, that list all the words in all the world.
Words of old, words that are new, words for things that you had never even considered before. . .
And you (for yes, you are the beloved in this tale, as unexpected and inexplicable as such fortune is), you read these books. You do not read quickly, but you do read. And you may not learn quickly, but -
you do learn.
