And when Mira somehow got pregnant, Zoey was overjoyed, and promised herself she would be the best Aunt and the best best friend any of them could ask for. And she didn't think about what that would mean for the rest of her life. Or whether she would ever fall in love (again). Or whether she would ever get to be a mom.

That’s Rumi’s voice, no doubt. Melodic even without trying, sweet in the way her tongue wraps around every syllable she says, and shoots lightning bolts down the pit of Mira’s tummy.
That’s Rumi’s voice. Mira is 100% sure.
So why does it feel so wrong?
“Mira?”
Startled, Mira looks over her shoulder. Her stomach sinks without a warning, and that same chill from earlier claws its way down her spine without mercy.
Because standing over there with Zoey, her mouth parted open in pure shock, is Rumi.
Rumi, who was supposed to be beneath Mira. Who is still underneath Mira.
Rumi, who summons her newly enlarged saingeom without hesitation.
Rumi, who sits up and hums wickedly into Mira’s ear.
“You mind getting off my lap, sweetheart?”
Rumi would never say that. Rumi would never call her that. Rumi would never look at her like that.
Mira gasps, and ‘Rumi’ grins. “Took you long enough.”

Finally, Zoey blurted it out, voice soft but sharp:
“Have you ever thought of… something besides monogamy?”
Mira’s thumb stilled on the screen. She looked up, slow. “…What?”
Zoey’s hands twisted in her lap. “Like—not open relationships. Just… not just one person. Have you ever thought about being with more than one person and it still being okay?”
She wasn’t looking at Mira. Her voice was tight, like it hurt to speak. Mira watched her with a furrowed brow, still quiet.
“I feel so guilty all the time. Because I love you, Mira. I love you, and this doesn’t change that, but I see her and I want to make her smile and I want her to hold my hand and I think she’s beautiful and weird and sweet and I—”
She finally looked up, tears shining in her eyes.
“I think I ruined us. And I’m so sorry.”
Mira just stared at her. Wide-eyed. Silent.
Zoey’s heart dropped. “Say something.”
Mira exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for a month.
Then she visibly deflated—shoulders dropping, head tilting back against the wall—and let out a quiet, choked laugh.
“…Oh thank god.”
