“We have a few minutes to ourselves,” she said, resting her head in her hands as she looked at him. “How ‘bout we do a dry run date?”
“Don’t know how dry it’ll be,” Kiryu replied, to which Goromi’s eyebrows arched almost clear off her face. Kiryu held up his hands, which were damp and clammy.
“Nerves,” he explained, and Goromi chuckled, seeming amused despite herself.

Summary
Tonight, Majima’s working on the last basket of takoyaki when he glances up to see his cigarette dangling from Kiryu’s mouth. Kiryu doesn’t acknowledge that he took it, just tilts his head and flicks on a thick gold lighter. The flame is high, light kissing the hollows of his chest in the vee of his open collar; when it flicks out, he drops the lighter back on the table and inhales. Majima stabs a toothpick through crust.

“Alright. What’d he say?”
“He said,” Nishida paused to clear his throat, and Kiryu wondered if his resolve was faltering. “He said to tell you that’s quite a dragon you’ve got. And he doesn’t mean the one on your back.”
Kiryu dropped the phone.
Nishida dropped both the phone and his notebook and hid his face in his hands.
This can’t be happening. This absolutely can’t be happening. I’m going to fucking kill him the next time I see him.

“If you’re going to work for me, I’ll expect you to keep up,” Kiryu declared. “You’re a new recruit, and you’ll have to pull your weight just like everyone else. No special treatment.”
“I’d never ask you for that,” Daigo protested. He hesitated for a second, then added tentatively, “Aniki.”
Kiryu screwed his lips into a grimace and stiffened in discomfort at the title. Next to him, Yayoi took another drag in a vain effort to hide her amused smile. Daigo recalled, belatedly, the difficulty with which he’d persuaded the man to call him something other than young master.
“You haven’t really sworn up yet, so I don’t think…” Kiryu started.
“Okay, well, I’ll still take whatever jobs you give me, Kiryu-san,” Daigo said.
