    Summary

“I’m obsessive about everything,” Neil protests, sitting in a booth with the four upperclassmen he can stand. “What makes this obsession special?”

“Okay, we get the Exy obsession, because you’re legitimately planning on going pro, and we get the Kevin obsession because he’s dedicated to teaching you to go pro, and we even get the Minyard obsession,” Dan says.

“Shh,” Neil pleads desperately, hoping beyond hope that nobody heard that.

“But the podcast has nothing to do with Exy! It’s half about music, and you don’t even like music that much,” Dan says. “It’s literally just music and a really weird guy talking about his homicidal impulses, and it sorta sounds like a joke, but on a much more real level it sounds like it’s absolutely not a joke and I would call the authorities if this guy gave any personal details at all,” Dan says.

“It’s mostly a joke,” Neil offers, but it sounds weak to his own ears.

    Summary

Neil had a lot of secrets. He didn’t want much in life except to live quietly, run his botanical store, upload TikToks covering plant care, and for not a single person to find out that he’s the best-selling author N.A.J who published one book anonymously five years prior and disappeared. His life takes a turn when his literary agent tracks him down for a follow-up book with the theme of feeling settled and at peace. Two things Neil is not.

Thus begins his journey of planting roots in a town he’s lived in for years, starting with making friends with people who have tried to bring him into their circle. As Neil gets closer to them and his secrets become less guarded, there’s still that one big secret he intends on taking to his grave. But the closer he gets to his friends the closer he unknowingly gets to that secret being revealed.

Andrew had everything he needed in life. A successful music acquisition and appraisal firm? Check. A best friend for a business partner who also happens to be a renowned concert pianist? Check. Time to play the music he wanted and cook what he wanted, and the money to afford both? Check, check, check.

An awkward enigma of an incredibly attractive, adorably awkward, overwhelmingly talented musician with a tragic backstory and a British accent?

Ah…he knew he was missing something.

    Bookmarker's Notes

oh my god i loved this !!!!!!! the story and the slow burn were delightful of course and the writing... the writing !! there was such a good understanding of like repression and recovery and how easy it is to slide back into repressing and how every single day you have to work not to do that you have to work to get better until one day youre standing as a changed person but you are still exactly the same, someone who doesnt belong to this life that youve created but you have to live it anyway, whos put all this work into repression in order to cope but suddenly that wont help you anymore but whats left without it what are you meant to do if you cant switch those feelings off where is left to go
anyway some favourite quotes bc ouch ow

    - But Andrew understands what it is that’s changed. Neil’s life changed, just as Andrew’s did. There was horror and then there wasn’t. There was just the shock of a life, unfurling before him. When you’ve been through hell, the possibility of a ‘normal life’ feels like enough. It feels like more than enough, so that something like ‘loneliness’ doesn’t seem like such a terrible thing. Until it starts emptying you.
    - The truth is, sometimes Andrew does care. But it’s like his anger; he has to swallow it down. Caring feels too much like splitting himself open for the whole world to see. It also feels a little too much like flying, like falling. The threatening tilt of vertigo. He doesn’t know what will be left of him when he lands on his feet.

He doesn’t know how to tell Neil that not caring is just easier than caring.

    It always has been.
