Darcy walked through the woods, his horse's reins held loosely in his hands. He couldn't sit in the Collins’ drawing room waiting for Elizabeth to return, acting as if nothing had happened between them. Soon he'd be away from Rosings and able to regain his equilibrium.
Despite his concerns over asking Elizabeth to marry him, he truly had not considered a refusal. Perhaps it was arrogant of him to assume that Elizabeth would say yes, but he had wanted her so much. A cracking sound in the silence drew his attention. There was Elizabeth, her gaze meeting his and eyes widening in shock.
“Mr. Darcy!”
