    Xingchen had known, known who Xue Yang was, what he had done, and still—he’d taken him into his bed. He’d let Xue Yang touch him, for—years, months, Song Lan didn’t know how long. Couldn’t bring himself to ask. It burned in him, the idea of the two of them, of Xue Yang’s hands, bloodstained, stroking over Xingchen’s skin, touching him, inside him—
    “I told Xue Yang that we all have pasts, that only who you become matters. Who you choose to be now,” Xiao Xingchen had told him, that first day. “Do you not agree? Is there not a possibility for change, for new life, in everyone?”
    “But—him?” Song Lan had said, Fuxue vibrating in his grip with his need to punish Xue Yang, to separate him from Xiao Xingchen. His whole life taken from him, all the innocents murdered, everyone he’d grown up with, and the man responsible, the man who’d blinded Song Lan--
    “We either mean it, or we don’t,” Xingchen had said. Unsaid: and if we don’t, there’s nothing left for any of us. Nothing left for you, Song Lan.
