“Wrong?” His voice would’ve barely reached you if it didn’t bounce off the crumbling walls. “What makes you think I’d have a problem with your decision?”

Another exhale. This time, it came as a sigh from your mouth.

“I asked you a question first,” you shot back.

“And I answered it,” Chrollo replied immediately. “You insinuated that your decision would impact me negatively.”

Your eye twitched. “I didn’t insinuate anything.”

“Then why ask for permission?” he continued. “None of the other Spiders have ever asked me for permission on how to live their lives, and not once have I dictated theirs. That includes you.”

His head gave the briefest turn in your direction, just enough for you to get a glimpse of his jaw. Orange hues danced on his pale skin, casting his shadow on the ground — large enough to swallow your whole body.

“Are you scared of how I might react if you left my side?”

So here's the thing about getting hit by a truck: you're supposed to wake up in a hot anime boy's harem or whatever. Not in the body of a B-list superhero from a show you only half-paid attention to while eating takeout.

But no. She's in The Boys universe now. Stuck as Starlight. Surrounded by sociopaths in spandex. And her only goal is to not get lasered into fine red mist by Evil Superman with mommy issues.

Simple, right? Just stay quiet, don't draw attention, and definitely don't say anything that makes Homelander like her.

Except she panics. And overshares. And accidentally says something about how lonely he must be, looking down at everyone, never having anyone who can just stand next to him.

And now he's looking at her like she's the first person who's ever seen him.

She didn't want this. She didn't ask for this. She just wants to go back to her apartment and her shitty Wi-Fi and her complete lack of mortal peril.

But Homelander doesn't let go of things he wants.

    Yet I feel desire
    Deep craving—heat
    Hunger
And I fear the day I may
    have no choice but to
    let it feed.

Gortash stared at the poem, at a complete loss for words. And for emotions. And then, the smug grin tugged at his lips. ... She could claim all she wanted that she was no longer the girl he lay in that graveyard with all those years ago. It was clear that in ways, she indeed was.

Durge could talk all she wanted about being nothing but a scion of Bhaal ... and claim until she ran out of breath that it was all she was, all she would ever be...

Ophelia the poet, the lover of life and nature, and the girl who craved a soft touch was still alive in there. And she wanted him.

Gortash tightened his fist around the parchment, crumpling it as he held it to his chest and stared out the tower window, still grinning.

    And he wanted her.

    ----

The pre-canon backstory of my Durge, Ophelia. For all the devotion she thinks she should have to Bhaal, she is just as equally full of female rage and desire to be free and to love the childhood friend who treated her like a person when no one else did.
