"Once this contract is signed, I'll have boxed Gould out of the Pacific Northwest at last." George paused, grinning; the idea of it was simply too delicious not to savor. "But to do that, I'm afraid I may need your help, my dear."
"Name it." Bertha pressed herself up onto her toes to steal a kiss before leaning back in his arms again. "You know you need only to ask."

Summary
"No respectable woman would consent to finding herself across a crowded room from George Russell, let alone to marrying him – excepting one, of course, who is in no position to turn down a man who can fund her son’s remaining years at Harvard and pay off the heavy mortgage on her family’s ancestral home. Summary
She doesn’t like parties without George at her side to murmur sharp little asides to, or bring her champagne, or dance with her when the song is slow enough. She doesn't like parties where everyone looks at her like she's a three-legged puppy because her husband- her ex-husband- stays glued to the opposite side of the room as though she's got a forcefield around her.
In which Bertha and George are divorced, and make it everyone else's problem.
