"Would you come if it were a request and not an order anyway?"

If he’d asked, truly asked, I want to see you topped with please, Jean would have cursed him out and jumped on the first plane to South Carolina. And perhaps I guess you could come here is not a stern come to Palmetto that it could have been, but it is not good enough, it is not what Jean wants from him. In the end that’s what’s changed the most: Jean can want things now, not as much as his heart would like to, but just enough to expect something honest from Kevin.

Jean brushes his fingers over the ridiculous print of a beret on his brand new sheets and asks, "Is there even a difference in your vocabulary between those two?"

"Is there for you?" Kevin retorts.

or, Jean Moreau agrees to visit Palmetto during winter break. It goes about as well as you might expect.

When Andrew Minyard rides his bike past a rain-drenched hitchhiker in the middle of a storm, he thinks nothing of it. But as Andrew continues to see him, week after week, rain or shine, he can't help but offer him a ride.

Life outside the Nest is hard. Playing clean is hard. Liking a boy is hard. Jean needs someone with a whistle to set him straight. Picks up right after The Sunshine Court, canon divergent.

“No,” Jeremy said–said it like a command to a misbehaving dog. Kevin’s words came back to him, words that had filled him with dread, which he’d tried to put out of his mind: If you tell him to submit, he will. Jeremy had been more scared of those words than anything else Jean had thrown his way since the beginning of the summer. “No. You will not do this again. Do you understand?”

“It is a guarantee that I will follow the rules. I need it. I can’t afford to–”

“I said no,” Jeremy growled. And before he could think better of it, he used it: “Jean, submit.”

Jean went silent. Jeremy felt a buzz of electricity with the power of that word. The tone of the room had changed.

    Summary

According to the team, Andrew is currently losing a custody battle for Neil against a sport invented by the mafia.

It’s a running joke in the locker room: Neil cares about Exy, and then, distant second, he cares about breathing. Andrew is somewhere on the list, probably below the new backliner spread Kevin found.

Andrew doesn't bother correcting them. He knows the difference between a distraction and a destination. He knows Neil runs until his lungs burn to keep the ghosts quiet, but he also knows exactly whose bed Neil crawls into when the adrenaline fades.

(Or: 5 times the team thought Neil loved the sport more than the goalkeeper, and one time Neil made the hierarchy terrifyingly clear.)

Neil Josten isn't anything. Not a real person, and not an alpha, beta, or omega, either.

He's mostly just trying to stay alive.
