Summary
Vincent Whittman had been demoted. One of the best Crime Correspondents America has ever seen has been burdened with the amateur task of trekking down to Southern Louisiana in the vibrant, multi ethnic city of New Orleans to personally investigate the harrowing murders that have been seeping fear and plaguing the local tight-knit community. So instead of dishing out executive orders in his gaudy office in Uptown Manhattan, he is forced to march down viscous algae-filled and alligator infested swamp waters with pomade running down his neck. The hot, humid and oppressive climate slowly eating away at his carefully curated persona of perfection as a charming local Radio Host around him acts clueless.

Hell is other people. Purgatory is being a twenty something weatherman with the memories of a being a media overlord who had the entirety of Hell wrapped around his finger.
Sent back to his mortal life with a chance to "do it right this time", Vox has a problem. The Angels have installed a patch in his soul: the Pacifist Protocol. If he tries to kill a rival, poison a boss, or throw a punch, he is paralyzed by blinding agony.
He cannot claw his way to the top if he can't use his claws. He needs a loophole.

Summary
After an unforeseen event within his home, the Protagonist finds himself completely and utterly alone and in no way capable of defending himself against the encroaching night... and the impending arrival of the Intruder. However, he's in luck (though he wouldn't exactly call it that). The madman who has consistently shown up on the Protagonist's front door step, demanding proof of humanity, has received a gift in the form of a bullet in the shoulder, the result of a crossfire between himself and a residence of suspected Visitors. The Protagonist would much rather have anyone else in his house than that maniac (which is shocking considering his approach to people in general), but he finds himself incredibly surprised at the sudden impulse to carry on with his sad and miserable life.
