“Well, that little gay pixie out there just had her hand in your back pocket,” The landlord says, hands on her hips. “You sure you two aren’t a couple?”
“No, we’re just best friends. Roommates now, too.”
The landlord sighs and flips over the white paper in her hand. “Well, as you would have read, you can’t get the discount on rent, then. It’s for married couples only.”
“The discount?” Shauna murmurs, the zeros on her student debt screaming at her in her head. “How much?”
“Half the advertised rent price.”
Oh. Shauna thinks, then gulps.

“I was only joking,” She blurts out, symptomatic of disconnect between mouth and brain. “We are. A married couple—yeah. Me and Jackie are married.”

Summary
“Jackie?” The voice that leaves his lips is unfamiliar and that tugs at her heartstrings so harshly she nearly throws up. She can feel her bottom lip trembling, her eyes subconsciously fitting all over his face, taking in all the differences she finds there. The fact she hasn’t seen them happen makes her want to hurl.
She can’t bring herself to say his name, unsure if that’s even still the one she knows, so instead, she remains quiet, gaping at him in silence.
“Can I get you a drink?” What he doesn’t add is “It looks like you could use one.” Jackie nods slowly, unable to rip her eyes away from him, transfixed by what she’s seeing.
