As they stand there looking at each other while panting with their own righteous anger, suddenly Madame Morrible’s words echo around them. She is proclaiming Elphaba an enemy of the state. Evil. Distortion. Repulsion. Wicked Witch. Glinda feels the words as they land heavily around them. There is resignation in Elphaba’s gaze as she appears so far away. Glinda wishes she could reach her somehow. When she catches the movement of her hand: open, welcoming, lonely. She grabs her hand and holds onto it with all her might, so she might never slip away again. “Don’t be afraid,” Glinda tells her. She means the words, but they are not just directed at Elphie, but at herself.
