She’s been on her feet for twelve hours when she first sees him. Angela had called in sick at the last minute, and God knows Bertha can always use the extra cash. She barely makes anything waitressing to begin with.
He comes into Leonardi’s and sits down at a booth without waiting. It’s not like it’s against the rules or anything, but most people look at her and wait to be gestured to an appropriate seat.
But he’s not most people. She can tell that already. It’s not just that he sits and stands like he owns the place, or that he’s wearing a black suit jacket that looks like it was tailored just for those broad shoulders—it’s that when that jacket swings back as he sits, she catches a glimpse of bulge tucked into the back of his waistband, and she’s been around the block long enough to know what that means.
In which George Russell is an up-and-coming "businessman" who meets a very pretty waitress with big dreams.

Miss Kathryn Morrison was so terribly grateful to the Russells for having her over to their cottage in Newport for a long weekend, especially after the rest of their guests had so unexpectedly canceled. She was so looking forward to getting out of the city. And the Russells had been so very kind to her. They really were simply too generous.
(A fanfiction of a fanfiction, if you will. Dedicated to fangirl_squee's the monstrous and the sublime and set in the months after that story's third chapter. Self-insert fiction I suppose, if you wish it to be, as much as it pains me to say that, though hopefully, at least, better written than the median of that genre.)

His first thought was how utterly absurd the notion was. So absurd he feared for his wife’s sanity. His mind was halfway towards expressing that anxious sentiment, when the alternative hit him, the pieces slotting together.

At his comment he watched her nostrils flare, her lips purse, her eyes dart away. His wife surely would never have entertained this conversation if she hadn’t had two substantial glasses of claret with dinner, but as it was he was inclined to press that good fortune. It would hardly be the first time a bout of her anger had rolled into something more enjoyable for them both.
“I’m asking what my wife might let herself imagine,” he paused to let his meaning be clear, “when alone.”
