Summary
Shane had truly believed that the worst was behind them.
Mostly because his barometer for ‘worst’ had been recalibrated from a weighted mass of worry lodged in the base of his throat about league reactions, and the strain of hiding his heart, rewritten in an instant where he'd known that the worst was actually a notification bubble in a corner where it never showed, next to a name that taught Shane what it was worth to be alive at all; that opened up and spelled terror and the end of the whole goddamn world—but then it wasn't. They didn't end. Shane didn't lose. They made it through the worst.
Surely that meant everything would be okay moving forward, since they'd already survived the worst.
__________
Or: Shane genuinely does believe they've made it through the storm, that the worst came for them and they walked out okay. Breathing. Alive. Together.
Shane—waiting for his fiancé in a hotel room, watching the man he loves more than life collapse on the ice in high definition, the light vanishing from his eyes, the feed cutting just before a crash cart descends upon him—
Shane realizes swiftly—painfully—that he was really fucking wrong.

Summary
Riz smiles at you crookedly. You understand why people fall for him and have their heart crushed. As if he can hear your thoughts, the smile drops and he sighs.
“You don’t just, like…scare other ace people?”
“Ace,” you repeat, confused. “You are no pilot, Riz Gukgak.”
“No, no, I know,” he promises, holding his hands up. “I meant—asexual.”

Summary
Every single example online of the love languages could fit Ilya to some degree – Shane had never thought about it before, but now that he knew, it was a problem that he didn’t know Ilya’s. He already wasn’t fluent in Russian, despite his attempt at learning, and he refused to be behind on another of Ilya’s languages.
Shane looked down at Ilya, still passed out asleep in his arms, and nodded to himself, ready to run a series of experiments until he found what worked for Ilya.

Summary
“Because I can’t fucking do this, Ilya. I’m going to my parents’, I- I need a break, alright? Shit.” Shane’s gaze locked onto his keys and he picked them up, stalking towards the door. He needed a break from the arguing and he needed to go somewhere he could breathe and collect his thoughts, so he could process this correctly and talk about it with Ilya civilly. Everything was still suffocating and overwhelming and Shane needed out, needed to go sit in his car and drive in silence to his parents’ place.
-
Ilya had seen enough breakups to know what one looked like. Shane ignored him, and looked irritated, and said he couldn’t do this (this, like everything between them could be reduced to a single word other than love), and said he needed a break (his confidence in Ilya’s English was comforting up until Ilya realised it meant Shane didn’t feel the need to say the dramatic I’m breaking up with you that characterised the ends of relationships).or, hollanov fight and misunderstandings resulting in an injury ensue

Summary
Every quarter, Ilya has a new obsession in the cottage, from planting absurd amounts of maple trees, to organizing themed events such as a Night at the Frozen Lake Challenge and Drinking Ginger Ale Against the Clock, to participating in the largest tomato competition. When he starts neglecting his usual household duties because of this, Shane throws divorce papers on the table.
OR: That was supposed to be a joke. But Ilya only reads the names Hollander, Rozanov, and the word "divorce", and he panics.
