It’s March and it’s too cold for Billy to be shirtless and wearing shorts, but he hadn’t noticed until Harrington appeared and made him hold still. Harrington can’t seem to stop looking at the bruises. “What’s it to you if I miss a little school, Harrington?” Billy asks. He feels goosebumps rising on his skin.
“I don’t know,” Harrington snaps back, looking uncomfortable. He shifts his weight from one foot to the other. Plant your feet, Billy wants to scream at him. I’m going to bowl you over.

Summary
Elida Gardner, Callsign "Aegis", has chased her way through life following the loss of her younger sister. She enlisted in the army to separate herself from things she couldn't change, and save the things she could. Now, after years of stagnation, she gets ambushed one morning in the gym after a particularly dark nightmare, knocking the man prone only to come face to face with her C.O. and two strangers. She comes to find that they're from Task Force 141 and her C.O. has pushed her through to sign on as their new combat medic. But can she keep the pace she's been setting, or will she- or they run her ragged. Can Aegis keep up appearances? Or will the weight she's been carrying finally drag her beneath the waters edge. Or worse, will someone pull her out of the water and make her learn to stand again?

“You are enough just as you are, and anybody who tells you different will find themselves laid out for spit’n that kind of bullshit at my kid.” He tucks her into his chest as the first broken sobs burst past her lips.
She might be eighteen, a legal adult, but she’s still just a kid looking for the comfort of a parent.
