It hurts to hear his name like that, so gently spilling past lips that moments prior spat insults at him without a care. His trembling fingers still against his keyboard and he blinks past the glare of his laptop screen to turn his gaze upon Theo.
That’s a mistake. The boy looks wrecked. Barely-there and dead behind the eyes.
A paper-thin smile flits over Theo’s lips. Stiles thinks finally, this is him. Not acting anymore, not playing up the good-guy façade that he puts on for Scott and the rest.

Summary
Zuko was supposed to die that night, at his father's hands and at the behest of his grandfather.
Ursa was supposed to vanish that night, and take nothing with her but her name.
Things didn't exactly go to plan.
OR: spirited away from the fire nation by their mother and abandoned to a life of poverty and running, zuko and azula learn to manage. right until the avatar and his friends drop way too cheerfully into their life, and the war returns to them in earnest. a story of hope, hardship and learning to believe in humanity again. zuko wants absolutely nothing to do with it, thank you.

“What’s Tong got on you for you to want me dead this badly, anyways?” It’s a side attempt at distraction, sure, but Zuko also genuinely wants to know. He lunges at an opening, just to punctuate the question.
The stranger ducks and rolls out of the way, swearing as he pops back up, covered in sweat and grime, with a feral glint in his eyes.
(It’s the hottest thing Zuko’s seen in a while, to say the least, considering that he lives on a deserted island with only the snakes on his head and his mean baby sister for company.)The mayor of Chin Village agrees to release Jet's friends if he kills the snake-headed monster that lives on an island nearby.
(Said snake-headed monster's older brother does not take particularly kindly to this.)
