Summary
Pat Butcher is a witch.
A witch who, post-divorce, has no home, no Coven, and aside from his familiar Thomas, no friends. On a whim, Pat returns to the abandoned grounds of a manor he visited oh so long ago, and makes that his ongoing project and home. Through a number of welcome break-ins, he slowly befriends the odd inhabitants of the town, none more than Humphrey Bone, and a man only known as ‘The Captain’.
Despite his best interests, Pat finds himself falling for the pair. But, being a witch in hiding means he's told them both his fair share of lies, and not helping matters, there’s someone - a number of them, actually - who don’t much like the presence of a witch in their town, and are determined to do something about it.

Summary
Professor James Higgins encompassed all the traits that a good entomologist should have: studiousness, dedication, a love of insects (particularly of the order Lepidoptera), and a strong belief in logic and the scientific method.
Therefore, whenever some first year inevitably raised their hand during syllabus week to ask if the science building was really haunted, he responded with a very firm and definite ‘no’.
Some of his colleagues, however, did not share his skepticism.
“There be a ghost moving abouts the east wing today,” Mary greeted him.
“Hello to you too, Miss Guppy.”
“An’ the vendin’ machines all outta the good biscuits.”
“Damn and blast!”

Summary
It was just a walk; simply a way of burning off some energy before bed. It presented a fine opportunity to find some inspiration for poetry; perhaps an owl, looking for its mate on a moonlit windowsill, or a lone chess piece on the worn wooden floor, longing to be reunited with its battalion.
Thomas found himself where he knew he was headed all along.
“Thorne!”
The Captain had shot up out of bed, swagger stick pointed rudely at his face.
Thomas and the Captain had a way of finding each other over the years.
