Summary
In 1728, Woodes Rogers returns as governor of the Bahamas. Every protection Madi was left with has crumbled. Even the island her war was surrendered to save is no longer beyond the grasping reach of the British Empire.
Twelve years prior, Madi wakes up on a beach, remembering a future where she tried and failed.
The half-starved pirates being dragged into her camp don't know her yet. Her father is still alive in Nassau, but days away and hours from the injury that will kill him. She knows the consequences of not having her war. Now she means to wage it, even if it means Long John Silver can never come to be.

White sand. Blue water lapping lazily at the shore. Sun warm enough to sink deep into bone.
For a moment – half a breath – Silver almost let himself believe he’d died. Surviving a storm like that was laughable. This had to be the afterlife.
