Summary
It would’ve been easier if Ilya had taken his hand outside and allowed for the potent sedative on Shane’s glove to absorb through his skin, out there in the secluded, concrete garden of the estate. The drug would’ve taken him before he realized it, and he would’ve been a lot calmer. But to his own surprise, Shane found that he didn’t mind the brief moment when his dark eyes met Ilya’s panic-filled ones just before Ilya was visibly overtaken by drowsiness and his legs buckled. Maybe it was the moment of peace that had immediately washed over him that negated the fear Shane saw. Maybe it was something else, but now – with the Russian limp in his seat, his body lolling forward until his head rested on Shane’s shoulder as he succumbed to drug-induced slumber – was hardly the time to ponder it.

Following the death of Grigori Rozanov, Alexei becomes head of the Russian Mafia. The Hollanders, leaders of the most prominent American mafia, assign their youngest son and prodigy, Shane, to lead their mission in asserting power over the Rozanov family by kidnapping their most forward-facing member: Ilya.

Ilya has a guy’s night out with some of their Ottawa teammates. Shane, not wanting to be out until 3:00 a.m., opted to stay home. He ends up being out until 3:00 a.m., anyway, because his husband is simultaneously the most annoying and adorable drunk he’s ever seen.

“Shut up." He blushed. “I guess… I just thought it would be bigger.”
He nearly deflated on the spot. A puck to the jaw would have been less brutal than those seven words.
