    Here’s the thing.

    It was always going to end terribly. That’s not surprising, call it fate, call it a curse, call it Doom, this whole wretched venture was an exercise in beautiful futility. How many lines in the songs of these days can the Noldor earn, flinging themselves in vain between a rock and a hard place until their skulls shatter against the mountain.

    But though the ending may be fixed, there are a great many roads to tragedy. Here, where once we might have gone left and taken the well-trodden path, we instead - by chance, by choice, by curiosity - turn left.

    Fingon, son of Fingolfin, goes up a mountain looking for his cousin. Fingon, son of Fingolfin, does not come back.
