‘Do you think she feels it too?’ Devon asks. ‘When you go to work down there.’
Mark shoots her a glare from where he sits at her kitchen counter. Right now he's really wishing that he hadn't drunk so much she won't let him drive home.
‘What are you even talking about? I'm sure he's fine.’ Mark emphasises the ‘he’ with such a strength that it comes out almost spitting.
‘Mark…’
Mark hates the pity in her voice. He wishes he'd never told her any of this. It had been easier, when she'd still had Gemma.
‘He doesn't know. So he'll be fine.’Or, there's another part of Mark Scout that dies with Gemma.

“The classical approach is designed to protect the person being severed from receiving sensory input during the procedure. Not pain; we use local anaesthetic to the scalp, and the brain itself has no nerve endings, of course.”
“Of course.” Mark rolls his eyes. She doesn’t seem to notice.
“But your tract is too scarred to use the same approach. My modified technique won’t cause you any permanent damage, but there may be some… somatosensory effects.” She glances down at his crotch, and Mark feels his face flush with shame and anger.
Reghabi is forced to adjust her approach to reach Mark’s chip. To both of their horror, it involves stimulating the pleasure centers of his brain.

He says yes anyway.
Stranded at Lumon without his friends, Mark cuts a deal with Milchick to get them back. It’s not the weirdest thing that’s happened on the severed floor.
