For me, the best thing about the Raising Harry AU fics is not just the idea of Remus and Sirius getting a second chance and the happiness they deserve, I want to see them become mature adults after what they went through. This fic completely captures all of that.

I love how Sirius gradually learns to process everything, how he learns to raise Harry, how he lets go of the pain and guilt he feels and starts to live a life of his own, his choices regarding Remus, his relationship with Andromeda… the way it all develops is rewarding and hopeful. It’s a beautiful christmas story.

    Illustrative quote:

Sirius takes Harry home a few days into the New Year, knowing that the fact of Harry needing him is the only thing that keeps him together. Andromeda manages to keep the expressions of sympathy and pitying looks to an absolute minimum, and he’s grateful. Before he leaves she decides he’s not getting off that easily, and pulls him into a tight hug.

‘It’ll hurt less next year,’ she promises, pushing back a lock of Sirius’ hair. They look so alike, sometimes it startles him; seeing Andromeda’s like looking at a better, kinder, more competent version of himself.

Sirius just nods, unable to answer. She may be right – Andromeda usually is – but Sirius isn’t sure he wants to stop hurting. His pain seems like a very small punishment after what he’s done.

Remus has some New Year’s resolutions. Sirius confronts him about that… among other things.

There are fics where nothing much happens and the characterizations and the writing take the center stage. This is a great example of that:

    • It’s so beautifully written. It has an distinct and incredible writing style, poetic and mundane at the same time. I love how the author mixes the cyclical and hopeful vibes of a new year fic with the first war atmosphere.
    • The dialogue, the yearning, Remus’ thoughts, his pessimism, helplessnes and fear… and Sirius’s reaction to it. Everything makes sense.
    Illustrative quote:

Something, somewhere, moves incrementally. It’s the first day of the new year, 1979, and it’s not the beginning of anything, because whatever it is began long ago.
