It's been just over five days since Joel's gotten more than a split-second glimpse of his kid. Other than when he pokes his head into her room at night to make sure she's actually in her bed - more than once a night, if he's being honest - all he's seen is the back of her head, her ponytail whipping around corners. Ellie stays in her room until Joel's left for the day, and sneaks back into it in the evenings. No idea where she's spending her time, what she's up to - but at least she's sleeping in her own goddamn room.
Opening her bedroom door that night to find just a pillow in her place and her bag gone had been easily one of the most terrifying moments of Joel's life.

Ellie’s brow scrunches a little but she doesn’t wake, and Joel tugs the covers down a little further.
Her shirt and the flannel she’s swiped from him and wrapped herself in are both soaked in sweat.
“Ellie?” The hand he touches to her forehead comes away clammy and damp, and he wipes it on the topmost blanket. She shivers, and Joel's anxiety ratchets a little higher at the lack of response. “Baby girl, can you hear me?”

“As I said, Williams,” he says briskly. “It wasn’t real. I just made a recommendation that you get a taste of what would happen if you don’t straighten up. It won’t go on your file, I promise.” He gives her a playfully stern look. “But now you see what’s going to happen if you don’t start listening and shaping up.”
She’s embarrassed by how sharp the stab of betrayal she feels is. God. She should know better by now. She’s too old to fall for this shit.
“You understand me?” He asks, face still as open and unbothered as it’s ever been. Why wouldn’t it be, after all? He’s done his job, keeping kids like her in line, reminding them that they’re here as a privilege, not a right.
She grits her teeth against what wants to come out.
“Yes, sir,” she says tightly.
If she has her way, she knows that she will never set foot in this office again.
