“Steve?” Eddie interrupts again. Steve casts a glance in his direction, but Eddie is looking past him at the television with hazy eyes.

“Yeah, I’m here.” Steve jostles his foot gently and gestures for the doctor to continue talking about fluid levels. By fluid, he’s pretty sure she just means blood. The blood that Eddie was coughing up, he figures. It had to go somewhere, so they must’ve drained it the same way they drained all the leaking air from Max’s lung. Maybe. He hopes Eddie’s uncle gets this stuff better than he does.

“Don’t you live in Loch Nora?” Eddie asks just as the doctor is opening her mouth to speak again. Steve builds up to a sigh, unsure how exactly to tell Eddie to shut up when it’s not even his fault that he can’t, before he realizes Eddie’s gaze is still glued to the TV.

    Bookmarker's Notes

"One time they were watching some corny movie about medieval knights and one of the main characters got a dagger to the side, which he promptly pulled out and kept on gallivanting while the music swelled heroically. Dustin didn’t hesitate to rattle off the fact that actually, you aren’t supposed to remove the knife if that happens. You’ll bleed out.

Steve feels like he’s just pulled out the knife, and now all that’s left is to deal with the slow, agonizing process of bleeding out."

    Summary

Four months after he comes out on the floor of the Family Video bathroom, Robin sits him down on his bed.

“Okay, I’m gonna suggest something completely insane, but I’ve actually put a lot of thought and research into it and I need you to hear me out.”

Steve squints suspiciously at her, but shrugs agreeably. “Yeah, okay.”

    “We should get married.”

    Summary

Robin probably cries in front of Steve. Nancy can't really picture Robin in tears, but if she and Steve are so close then she must be hiding some vulnerability, something soft and fragile that Nancy just can't see. Steve loves her, understands her more than he ever did Nancy.

Something is different, and she ignores the taunts of Nancy Dre-ew that rise unbidden from the back of her mind as she once again grips the steering wheel like it's personally offended her, driving a little too fast for Hawkins roads at night and ignoring the rumble of the car in favor of focusing on the facts in front of her.

    Bookmarker's Notes

There’s something sick and terrible inside of her, she thinks. Something unimaginably cruel and terrified, something that lashes out like a wounded beast when it’s cornered. What could she possibly say to make this any better?

He takes a deep breath. “God, it’s just… It’s terrifying. You… have you ever felt like you’re just evil somehow? Like you’re screwed up and awful and one day it’s gonna overtake you, and everybody’s right? Even though it’s nothing… it’s not… it’s not me. It’s not… it’s just, like, homophobic bullshit they teach you in church even though they’re the real creeps, but still, it’s in the back of your mind, like what if somehow I’m everything they say about me, and…”

“You’re not,” Nancy says, because it just hurts too much to keep listening. “Shit, Steve, you’re like the best person I know.”

    Summary

    Evan hates Doug Kendall.

He isn’t supposed to hate anybody. That’s what love thy neighbor means. Doug isn’t actually their neighbor, he lives a few streets over, but Maddie said that when God says neighbor, he means like if the whole world was a neighborhood. Evan thinks that God should just say that he means to love everybody, then, but one time he said that and Mom and Dad made him pick out a stick from the yard and they hit him until he cried, so he doesn’t say much about God anymore.

He can’t say that he hates Doug, either. Doug is friends with Mr. Brooks, and Evan doesn’t really like Mr. Brooks, but everybody else does. He even gets to give the sermons sometimes instead of Pastor Daniel. Mr. Brooks is nice, and he pays way more attention to him than Mom and Dad do, which Evan likes, and he even gave him a Hot Wheels car once, and sometimes in school he has other little treats just for Evan, but Evan still—he just doesn’t think that Maddie needs a Mr. Brooks, is all.

or: how Evan and Maddie make it out of Pennsylvania, and Buck and Maddie build a family.

    Summary

When he’s sick, he still wants Maddie.

Buck knows it isn’t weird. It isn’t that weird, at least, for the two of them; most people instinctively want their mom when they’re sick. He’s rescued and transported enough sick and injured people to know that it isn’t exactly uncommon. Buck just always kind of thought he might grow out of it some day.

He thought he’d get over it in high school, when Maddie was beyond his reach and he was basically an adult already and shouldn’t need his big sister’s comfort anyway. He thought he’d be over it when he made it to L.A., when he graduated from the academy, when he finished his probationary year. He really thought that he’d be over it when he got into his first serious relationship.

But every time he has a cold and can’t fall asleep because it’s too hard to breathe, whenever he eats at the wrong food truck and ends up puking his guts out on the bathroom floor, whenever he has a hard shift or makes an obvious mistake or Abby doesn’t pick up the phone, some small, stupid part of his dumbass baby brain cries: I want Maddie.
