“The Smiths?” he asks, almost out of his own volition. He immediately wants to take the words back—he certainly does not need to be making small talk with Remus Lupin. But Lupin just blinks, surprised, looks down at his shirt and laughs.
“I didn’t think you would know them."
“I was alive in the eighties,” Severus tells him, almost in disbelief. “It would be harder for me not to.”
“No, of course. It’s just… I had to explain to Sirius who Queen were. I forget, sometimes. That you’re…” He trails off. For the best, Severus thinks bitterly.
“I would expect nothing else from Black,” he sneers. The cigarette has burned to the butt—he takes one final drag, fingers stinging.
“Don’t split your head open on the dungeon stairs,” Lupin says. “You’ll undo all my hard work.”
It startles an honest-to-God laugh from Severus—he clamps his mouth shut, mortified, but Lupin just grins, surprised and pleased.
“I will endeavor not to,” he tells Lupin, clipped, and stalks out of the room as fast as he can.
Later, when he’s made it to his bed without cracking his skull onto any stone, he realizes he forgot the cigarettes on the table.
“Fuck,” he mutters, and falls asleep.
