Summary
Shane and Ilya broke up. It was the adult, mature decision they made together and moved on from. Except Shane is still Ilya's emergency contact and Ilya's coach just called.
Ilya had a seizure. Well, seizures. Multiple. He is in the hospital, in the operation block and suddenly Shane is met with the possibility that last words Ilya Rozanov ever heard from him were "Maybe love isn't enough."
And then complications occur. And Ilya is not waking up.

They’d sat on a perfectly ordinary Wednesday afternoon in their perfectly ordinary kitchen, with coffee that had gone cold on the table between them, and calmly dismantled the life they’d built together. One sentence at a time.
“Maybe we need space.” “Maybe we’re just hurting each other.” “Maybe love isn’t enough.”
He wants to go back and shove that version of himself against the wall. Shake him until his teeth rattle.
Love is the only thing that matters when someone is under general anaesthesia and a stranger is touching their brain, Shane thinks wildly. Love is literally the only currency worth anything in a room like this.

He lowers the phone, and Hayden instantly launches into his rambling before Shane can get a word in. “Listen, I saw you were panicking, and you were so far away that you were barely responding, so I thought I’d call your girl, I thought maybe she knew how to help you better or she could talk to you, I thought–I don’t fucking know what I was thinking, but then he picked up the phone, and–”
“How do you know my passcode?” Shane asks again.
“That’s what you’re focusing on?” Hayden is basically yelling at this point. “Rozanov is screwing your girlfriend, and you’re worried about how I know your fucking passcode?”
Shane’s brain fully short-circuits.
“Rozanov is what?”

Shane rolls his eyes and spits onto the ice. “Gonna play a clean game, Rozanov?”
Ilya laughs. “Unless you give me reason not to, Hollander.”
“That’s pretty weak.”
“Just like your backhand.”
“Oh fuck off.”
Ilya shakes his head, tutting. “Not good enough, Hollander, sorry. Want to try again?”
Shane huffs. “Don’t have time, gonna be busy kicking your ass.”
Ilya glances at the warm up timer, realizing belatedly that they actually only have a few more minutes. “Alright, fine. I will be expecting better during the game!”
“Expect whatever you want, Rozanov.” Shane pauses. “Except for winning. You’re not getting that.”
“Ooh, good one! Keep ‘em coming!”

“What if we just stop hiding? We don’t have to make a huge deal about it — no big press conference or interview or anything — we can just start being ourselves. Let the public figure it out for themselves.” Shane shrugs. “We don’t owe them an explanation for what we do off the ice. I don’t want to come out for other people; I want to come out for me, and I feel like a big announcement would make everyone want us to answer their questions all at once, and I don’t want that. Whatever the public knows about our relationship… it should be on our terms, not cause some interviewer asked us a question and we felt pressured to answer.”
“So… like a soft launch?” asks Yuna. “I could get behind that.”
Shane nods.
“Okay.” Ilya puts his hand on top of Shane’s. “Let’s soft launch.”
Or Shane and Ilya decide to soft launch their relationship.

“You broke up with her,” Ilya says, arms loosening against his chest.
“No, she, uh—” Shane ducks his head, avoiding Ilya’s eyes. “We slept together. And she kind of … she didn’t confront me, I guess. But she talked to me. Kind of hinted that she thought I might not be…”
“Into girls?” Ilya finishes for him.
“Something like that.”
“You denied it?”
“No, I— I told her. About me. About—us,” Shane’s head snaps up, a hand lifted in Ilya’s direction. “Not about us, us. That I’d been sleeping with someone. Another player. I didn’t tell her about you.”
OR: Shane comes out to Rose and runs toward the safest pair of arms he knows: Ilya’s.
