They fight together. Work off each other. Jet’s injured. The shadow notices, and covers for it. Knows just how to cover for it, even though there’s absolutely no reason that they should.
The shadow also splits their sword in two, and does it in a very, very familiar way.
Jet doesn’t have time to let himself recognize why it’s familiar, he knows. This is all going to go to shit if he does. He doesn’t know why it’s all going to go to shit, but it is.
So he doesn’t, because he knows how to survive.

Summary
Ursa never knew Ozai planned to kill Zuko until it was almost too late. In the midst of his attack, Zuko manages to escape as far as his little legs could take him- onto a fire nation ship as a stowaway.
While on the run, Zuko hits his head hard enough to get amnesia. No longer knowing his actual name nor his bending abilities, ‘Li’ is saved by Jet, another boy his age residing in the forest.
