Elias looked at him with what looked like a mix of exasperation and… Amusement? Fondness? Jon cleared his throat and looked back at the statements on his desk.
"Jon," Elias said softly, "it's after hours on a Friday, and it's your birthday. I insist you leave all this for Monday."

The first time Elias puts an over-familiar hand on Jon's back as he introduces him to the research team, Jon thinks, "He might," and immediately cringes back in shame from his own thoughts. It must show in his body as well, because Elias removes his hand just as casually and doesn't touch him again. If Jon feels the weight of that hand hot at the base of his spine for the rest of the day, it's no one's fault but his own.
