There were rumors about Gansey and Ronan, of course, but Adam didn’t put much stock in rumors. He relied on what he could see. What he could hear.
What he saw was a flurry of fleeting moments of casual intimacy—a hand pressed to the small of a back and a whisper in the ear, touches that could have been romantic or platonic, both or neither. Space shared with ease. Eyes drawn to each other more than anyone else.
What he heard were snatches of whispered conversation—as if they were in their own world, and not a lecture hall full of a hundred other people. Every word was laced in hidden meaning and inside references and whole knowledge of the other.
It wasn’t exactly a stretch to imagine that the rumors were true.
Adam thought about that, too. The two of them, together. The picture they would make. Sometimes he was even desperate enough to include himself in the fantasy. He wondered what it would be like to be the subject of their undivided attention. He wondered if such a thing would be survivable.

Steve went, for the sake of not pissing anyone off any more than he already had, and also because Bucky deserved some privacy even though he was stuck in a fish tank, and because the stupid environment-mimicking lights did cause headaches after sixteen hours.
He hadn’t thought—he hadn’t thought it would be like this, that was all.

Even though it’s only been eight years, it feels like Steve hasn’t been home in decades. He half expects the buildings rising around him to be futuristic sci-fi buildings and floating maybe, or at least bright purple. The music coming through his earbuds – comfort music playlists he compiled as a teenager and never bothered to outgrow – is enough to calm him momentarily; he is still, all ten fingernails left alone and unchewed, but it will only last so long.
(alternately known as, what if Steve's sense of alienation and returning followed him across every universe, and what if in this one, Bucky played the cello.)
