    “Um,” Stolas ducked his head shyly, reaching for the pack of cigarettes sitting on the step beside the imp. He needed to have something in his taloned hands to avoid fidgeting like a fledgling. “I saw it in a shop window and thought you might like it. It’s nothing special really, just a tchotchke, but when I saw it, it reminded me of you.”

     

    As the owl was speaking, the assassin had already begun unwrapping the gift with nimble claws. 

     

    Stolas watched as the curiosity on the imp’s face melted into confusion that quickly turned into surprised delight. Backlit by the soft glow of the bright full moon, Blitzø held up a small glass horse with majestically expanded wings in a rainbow of colors. His darling appeared like such a pretty picture that the owl wished he’d thought of bringing his new phone out, just so he could take a photo to commemorate the event. He’d never had a picture of Blitzø looking this happy before…

     

    “Where did you get this?” Blitzø marveled, voice hushed.

     

    “As I said,” Stolas answered meekly, “I saw it in a shop window and—”

     

    “It must’ve cost you a fortune!” the imp exclaimed, all giddy until a shadow fell across his face.
