“Oh, Valarr, you can’t—” Aerion murmurs against her lips, petting the thin skin just underneath the collar of her nightgown. It’s more he’s ever done, their time together often spent with far too many layers of clothes with an understanding that their ways are limited.
Valarr breathes in sharply, loving the feel of him, when there is a gentle knock on her door.
They freeze. Lips still together, mouths open, they stare at each other, barely daring to breathe.
“Valarr, are you still awake?” her father’s familiar voice reaches their ears.
Their sweet moment ends, crashing down to reality. The connection between them surges— and the knowledge that only a barred door keeps their secret safe crashes back into them.

Dunk broke his ribs for the first time after he nicked a discarded soup bowl from a guard who wasn’t done with his meal after all. Dunk learned two things then; that broken ribs hurt like hell and that not even guards are honourable enough to be trusted. He’s broken his ribs many times after that, but he hasn’t disrespected any guards. Dunk might be thick as a castle wall, but he has learnt his place in the world by now."

After they determine this is indeed the word Rocky’s using, Grace snorts. “No. Courtship is, like, old-fashioned dating. Very formal old-fashioned dating.”
“No, no.” Rocky gestures to what he gave Grace. “Is courtship. Trust.”
“I don’t know what this is, but it’s not courtship!” Grace holds up the honest-to-God padded handcuffs Rocky made for him. They jingle a little. “Explain how this is old-fashioned to you. Quickly.”

Ryland Grace is a coward. Always has been. He doesn't take risks, and his failed scientific career, failed friendships, and failed romantic life don't prove otherwise. But he saved Rocky, whether that be out of selflessness or the fear of being alone again. He took a risk.
Grace is glum in the midst of waiting for Taumoeba-06 to evolve (any day now), burdened by loneliness and touch-starvation. Attentive Rocky notices this in Grace's demeanor and checks in on him. Grace confesses how much he misses physical contact and surprisingly discovers the feeling is mutual.
Rocky engineers a solution. Something that will drastically change the course of their relationship.
Or
Rocky engineers a method for him and Grace to hug. This escalates to Rocky pleasuring Grace, a misunderstood confession of love (language barrier), regular physical contact (among other things), and reaching a mutual understanding of what their relationship means.
