Note: This Touch AU takes its canon divergence point from a scene in the Embers series fic Unquenchable, which is set shortly after Petty Treasons and deals with Kip's episode of bonebreak fever mentioned in Hands of the Emperor. It's written as a standalone - it's not necessary to read any of the Embers fics to follow this one - though Unquenchable does give Kip's pov of some of the early scenes if that's of any interest.

Letters are an infuriating medium at times. Not that I can deny their value and their advantageousness, and of course it is better to be able to hear from you at all, when I am worlds away. But I wish that you were still only a floor below mine, that I could steal down to your apartments and see if you were awake, invite you to go on a walk in the gardens with me or play a game of draughts or just sit quietly with you, where I could read at least some of the currents of your heart and mind in your face and your posture, where you could take one look at me and see that I am brimming, overflowing with a thousand contradictory feelings and impulses without my needing to find the words.
Not, of course, that I was ever brave enough to do such a thing back when you were so close.
