Summary
On the road, VI can’t stop looking at Caitlyn. Her thoughts are a roaring mix of affection, guilt, curiosity, hunger. When was the last time she felt like this? Has she ever?
What is confounding Vi the most is that Caitlyn still hasn’t asked for anything, nothing concrete. Nothing, anyway, that could give Vi any guidance on how to proceed.
What does one do, when they desire someone without any other kind of strings attached? Without the need to hide away, be quick not to get caught, be rough to not be seen as weak? Is she simply allowed to take and be taken? What if it breaks her? What if it breaks both of them?***
Caitlyn is out of options- the only chance she has of avenging her mother is by partnering with Vi, the sister of her mother's killer, convicted in her place ten years prior. Together, they set out through the country on a desperate search, with the Chembarons on their tail.
Caitlyn is struggling with her grief and her guilt, Vi has to learn how to live. The road will either save them, or swallow them whole.

Summary
“I let her go.”
Vi turns once more, as Caitlyn’s admission cuts like a blade across her chest. She stares. The cell door opens with a creak.
“What?”
The woman before her has eyes like the sky, crisp and clean in a way she used to think she’d never see again, trapped forty stories down in the dark. “I fear we don’t have much time. Jayce believes war is coming. I’ve given us a bit of a grace period, but I…” she closes those eyes for a moment, steeling herself against what Vi can only hope is the weight of her conscience. Lonely months stretch between them like hands, grasping and grasping.
“Vi,” Caitlyn says. “We need to talk.”

Caitlyn Kiramman offers her seat on the council to Sevika. She thinks it'll help. Sevika fucking doesn't, and goes to tell her as much. The battered girl she finds holed up in a corner of the mansion surprises her. So does their conversation.

“Vi,” She responds quietly, smiling at the vision (because that's what Vi is, even after a fight– an absolute vision of a woman) in front of her. Both of her hands come up to cradle Caitlyn's face, and she willingly leans into it. “You're bleeding… are you– alright?”
“Am I alright–” Vi repeats the question, eyes welling up with tears– and Caitlyn brings her own hand up, it shakes so terribly, to caress Vi's cheek. She misjudges the distance, again– why? –and touches the air instead. She gets it on the second try. “–Oh, Cait, your eye.”
“I'm okay,” She assures her quietly, “I'm alright, Violet. I'm okay.”
