There was a hardness that had settled into her since the night on the couch that she seemed unable to remove from her face. A reticence was polluting her. During her cancer, he had watched Scully transfigure into a sack of bones with a very thinly stretched dermis. A marble sculpture; all pale, chiseled, unyielding. She had collected weight, gathered flesh to her bones again. Yet, in these weeks of distance, he saw something hollow returning to her. Her cheeks lost their flush, their rosy fullness. He missed her.
