    Hyacinth merely pulls up a chair and loiters in companionable silence. Anthony mulls the questions he always has – how much he’s failed her as an insufficient father figure, how long it’d take for her to resent him as such.

    "We became acquainted in London, Miss Sharma and I. I suppose you could say I'm calling," he finishes, fidgeting with the bouquet in his hands.
    "Oh," Mrs. Abbott says again.
    "I believe I'm trying to marry her," he adds, an escalation.
    "Oh," Mrs. Abbott repeats for the third time.
