"What do you want from me?" says Baze. He's not sure what he expects – demands for penance, or money, or protection against the apparently large number of people who want Chirrut dead.

Instead Chirrut drops to a squat and turns his face up to the morning sun.

"A period of service," he says. "Six months, no more."

But Chirrut only tilts his head back, exposing the vulnerable length of his throat, and sighs.

"Lou gong ah," he says softly, smiling. "Don't you know by now that you shouldn't?"

I love how playful the story is, despite its undercurrent of despair and Baze struggling to find hope again. “Don’t you know by now that you shouldn’t [trust me]?” Really captures how both sweet and sad this is.

“You long for a way to show my parents that you deserve me. That you have me handled. You want to use a display of physical strength, like fighting in the slave pits.” Paul blinks. She doesn’t ask if she’s right. “You didn’t carry me over the threshold on our wedding night.”

Female Paul is such a bitch. I want to grow up to be her.

On the eve of an important competition, Duncan sets out a bowl of whisky, hoping that he might tempt a brownie into sharpening his sword or putting new soles on his boots.

"You still don't trust me?" Oleander asks, sounding more disheartened than angry. "Even now, after all this time? It's a gift freely given, Duncan. I don't expect any more of you than I already have."

"But the magic would," Duncan says. "That's not a gift that gives itself freely. There's always a price to pay in return for it, as I understand it."

a fun twist on fairy tales. I love Duncan’s steadfastness.

… he saw with agonizing clarity that he’d only be standing before her a fool, holding out handfuls of wet sand as though he thought he cupped jewels beyond price. There wasn’t a trick that would get him under the walls; no traitor on the inside who’d let him through the gates in the dark.

The Jamie/Brienne we deserved but didn’t get. Leave it to the queen of ao3 to deliver instead.

    "Mother," he whispered, hopeless. "Please."

She was very still, and then slowly, she lowered her hand.

    "Mother!" Thor said.

"You are not my only son," she said to Thor, and she bowed her head.
