The tips of Patrick’s fingers skim across Joe’s palm under the water. It tickles, the touch too light to feel real. Joe’s heart stutters in his chest as Patrick lines their hands up, palms to fingertips. Joe folds his fingers into the spaces between Patrick’s and breathes out.

It felt weird to be anxious about what this younger him might think about his life now. A whole new level of self-conscious that his therapist would have a field day unpacking, if she didn't have him committed the second he mentioned time travel.
“So,” He drew the word out, tapping a rhythm on his legs. “Is the future everything you thought it’d be?”
It was a stupid question to ask, because Pete already knew how he’d thought his life would turn out at that age.
“I guess,” The kid half-shrugged. “I didn’t get Ghost-of-Christmas-Future-ed, so that’s a plus.”
Pete still managed to be underwhelmed. He was talented like that.

He tilted his head, weighing the phrase. “‘Okay’ isn’t the right word.”
Young him huffed. “What is?”
“It’s like…” He waved a hand through the air, thoughts bouncing around unhelpfully. “There are way more kids out there who grow up dreaming of being rockstars, than ones who actually get to be.”

Patrick leans into him, and Pete freezes. “There’s a very…uh, insistent girl behind me.” His breath brushes over Pete’s neck. Jesus Christ. “She’s convinced my name is Parker and that I’m some sort of sex god that’s willing to reunite her and her ex boyfriend by conducting a threesome so intense that they just have to make up.”
“Well, that’s just sad,” Pete says. “Why would they get back together when you’re the one with all these awesome sex skills and amazing threesome management?” Pete grins over the thumping bass and Patrick’s indignant sigh.

Patrick spends the Believers Never Die Part Deux tour secretly monitoring his growing crush on Joe. He has an equation that he uses to keep track of it--it’s complicated, but it involves boner-thoughts, hand-holding-thoughts, addition, subtraction, and division, which has to be at least 3/4ths of the elements needed for a serious mathematical calculation. He furtively plots the results in a spreadsheet, doesn’t really think about it the rest of the time, and everything is very normal and totally fine.
Obviously.
Then Joe announces his plan to try online dating, and that goes straight to hell.
