“It’s you,” she says, relieved.
JJ slips in quietly, the cacophony of the party getting louder for a brief moment, making it through the opening before the door shuts behind him. He doesn’t look surprised to see her. She wonders if he saw her come in, if he waited. Maybe he just finds her presence unfazing.
Kiara finds she’s not surprised to see him either, which makes no sense at all and every bit of sense.

There must have been a moment where someone pointed her out— John B, maybe, or their homeroom teacher Miss Rose, who always introduced every new student to the class with way too much fanfare— said, that’s Kiara Carrera, and continued about their day as if anything would ever be the same again. There must have been because when John B makes it to the cafeteria ten minutes late one day and shoves Pope aside so he can squish in next to him on the bench instead of sitting across from him with JJ like he usually does, when JJ realizes he’s doing it because there is a girl standing behind him, a girl who takes the empty space next to him without any preamble, JJ doesn’t need an introduction. He already knows her, somehow, but if there was ever an initial introduction, it’s lost to time.

“I brought you croissants as like, um, an olive branch,” she said, a week after they broke up, caught him in the middle of kicking rocks. She was wearing his sweater, the little JJ stitched on the sleeve from the year Pope’s mom got them all matching ones for Christmas, but he didn’t point that out. If he pointed it out, Kiara would probably take it off and give it back and he didn’t want that. He decided, in fact, that he never wanted to see the thing again. What good would it be to him anyway, if he could never get the scent of her shampoo off of it?
