Summary
Ava Silva had purposefully tried to forget everything about her years at the Catholic School she had been sent to at age sixteen. But there were things or, well, people Ava Silva could never forget. She couldn’t forget the tall, blue eyed and blonde haired girls who always looked at her as if she was insignificant and she couldn’t forget about the girl who for the two years Ava had been at Saint Melanie’s School for Girls remained a mystery Ava was head set on to resolve. She had been like some kind of magnet that had attracted Ava in more ways than one. And she had always been one of the few things that had remained at the back of Ava’s mind seven years after graduating from Saint Melanie’s. After all, the girl had been her first love and her first heartbreak. So when Ava was running late for work and almost got ran over by a car, she was extremely surprised to see Beatrice Armstrong-Young being the one coming out of the black Bentley’s driver’s side.
Or
Ava and Beatrice went to Catholic school together, where they left with two broken hearts and many things unsaid. What happens when the Universe gets into a silly goofy mood and makes them reunite in the most random of ways?

Summary
Beatrice finds herself musing not over duty and sacrifice and God, but the truth of angels, if they can be created rather than summoned. If they can take the form of women with overeager mouths and careless limbs and eyes with a depth that beckons - a crooked finger, a spiral staircase - if they can be both human and not, both beautiful and terrifying.
Ava asks, What do you want, Beatrice?
(Tell me and I’ll give it to you. Tell me and I’ll build you a home there. Tell me and I’ll rearrange the universe to make it all fit, angels and demons be damned. Tell me it’s me. Me. Me.)

Summary
The former nun held onto hope that Ava would return somehow, her body whole again. Though Beatrice had long felt doubt and worry, her belief and trust in God were challenged, but her faith remained with Ava. She knew, somewhere in her heart, Ava would return to her. Whether she would come back walking or crawling, she would find her way. She always did.

Summary
Because it turns out the Halo can want things now, sort of. Not the way a human would, with thoughts or motivation or articulable desires. The Halo wants things the way a tree wants water and shoves a taproot through flagstone to get it, which is all well and good for the tree, but less so for the idiot trying to keep her patio intact. Unfortunately for Ava, she’s both the idiot and the taproot. The flagstone is her dignity. The water – for reasons becoming rapidly and unavoidably apparent – is Beatrice.

Summary
“Some people think a soulmate is the person God creates for you. Others say it’s the soul yours has been drawn to time and time again, throughout multiple lives. Some even believe that each pair was formed during the creation of the universe itself.” Beatrice looks up at the sky, as though she might find an answer somewhere in the long dead stars hanging above them. “I’ve always liked that one, actually; that the particles ripped into being alongside each other formed a connection that would last as long as our universe did. I’m not sure it makes much sense in practice. But it sounds lovely.”
“Less cruel, at least,” Ava murmurs, and Beatrice turns at the sadness in her voice, drawing in a sharp breath when she sees the emotion so amplified in Ava’s eyes. “Because a god who created the whole soulmates thing in the first place, told you that you don’t get one, and then made you spend your entire life telling other people about theirs kind of sounds like a huge asshole, if you think about it.”
Which is, of course, why Beatrice so often tries not to think about it. Especially when Ava is looking at her the way she is now and she’s reminded of all the things she’ll never have (all the things she desperately wants).
