Summary
When the light finally pools over him, your breath hitches in your throat, horror dawning at the sight of him.
His face is a complete wreck, splotches of purple bruising and dried blood crust along the cuts on his face and disappear into his beard. He turns slightly, almost shying away from your gaze, and it causes the light to hit him at the just the right angle for you to get a look at the swelling over his left eye, complemented by heavy dark circles.
“You look like shit, Cartwright.” You utter quietly, trying for humour, but the tremor in your voice gives you away.
OR
River comes to you when he's injured, and you don't know how to turn him away — not that you ever would.
