Can't he tell that he is terrifying - a splintering lie of a person, a flat, unending pit in the fabric of reality, no more his Erik than a crude sketch, a second-hand description, a golem from the stories of Erik's childhood that he'd whispered to Charles at night sometimes, little pieces of his history shaped into gifts.
or: Charles experiences Shaw's death, a narrowly-averted war, and the disorienting powers of the helmet in rapid succession, and then gets shot. He deserves a little panic attack, as a treat.

“Mama?” Erik mumbled against Charles’s shirt, just as Charles noticed the tears making their way down Erik’s cheeks and leading to a damp spot on his t-shirt.
“Shh, it’s alright, love,” Charles whispered, “I would prefer Daddy, I think,” He added gently, pressing a kiss to Erik’s hair, one hand wiping at the tears. “But you’re safe. I’m here with you, we’re in a hotel and everything’s okay. I’ll make sure of it.”
