Summary
Mike Wheeler was a lot of things: stubborn to a fault and to his parents' dismay, clumsy as hell—curse his lanky body with its long limbs and bony, sharp edges—and socially awkward in ways that made "understatement" feel generous. Sometimes his brain was just so jumbled, his thoughts moving faster than his mouth could keep up, which led to him ranting and raving about whatever latest topic had piqued his interest, long past the point of anyone in the Party truly listening.
But he was also endlessly inquisitive. He always had been, ever since he was a child tugging on his mother's blouse with tiny hands sticky from maple syrup, asking questions about his parents' already crumbling marriage—questions he was far too young to understand at the time.
And he was fiercely loyal. He had sworn his oath to the Party long ago: to serve, to protect, to lead, to be The Heart, no matter what. Just as a good Paladin should.
But most of all? He was an idiot. A frankly oblivious, dense, dumb-as-a-box-of-rocks IDIOT. Because for all his book-smarts and nerdiness and his constant curiosity, his hunger for knowledge, he may as well have had the emotional self-insight of a stale, moldy piece of bread.

Summary
It's been three days since Will left abruptly one night, venturing into the Upside-Down to end this and kill Vecna. He knew he had to do it. He thought he wouldn't live long enough to have to explain himself.
He remembers that night so clearly— specifically, Mike waking up to the sound of him prowling around in the late hours, searching for Nancy's guns. He remembers Mikes bleary eyes and ruffled hair, and the flush high on his cheeks. Will remembers how kissable he had looked— how he had to force Mike to stay behind, using his newfound powers to lock him in his room. It was cruel, but he had no choice. Will remembers sliding against the door, where he could hear Mike sobbing on the other side, and whispering a confession:
“I love you so much, and I can't let you get hurt”

“’Morning,” Mike grumbled, voice low from sleep.
“Noon,” Max corrected, as if she hadn’t only woken up thirty minutes before him.
“Wow,” he replied, squinting at the light. “Nobody thought to wake me?”
It happened casually after that, so casually it almost didn’t register at first. El laughed at something Lucas said, then turned toward Mike and leaned in, instinctively, easily, pressing a kiss to his lips like it was the most logical way to say good morning to him.

or: Mike and Will have been together for a year and a half when El comes back. The problem is, El assumes she and Mike are still together. The bigger problem is that Mike doesn’t realize Will thinks he might choose her.
