Summary
Bilbo Baggins was no longer just a "burglar." He was a fixture. He could be found in the kitchens correcting the seasoning of the stews, in the library organizing scrolls with Balin, or, more often than not, sitting on the edge of the King’s council table, swinging his feet and offering common-sense advice that Thorin actually listened to.
The Company, the survivors of the original quest, had long since accepted this. They had watched the subtle shift from friendship to something deeper. They saw the way Thorin’s hand lingered on Bilbo’s shoulder, the way they shared quiet meals in the King’s private solar, and the way Thorin had presented Bilbo with the Mithril vest not just as armor, but as a promise.
To the Company, it was obvious. They didn't feel the need to announce it because, to them, Bilbo had always been theirs. They simply forgot that the rest of the world hadn't been there for the journey.

What do you get if you combine a prying wizard with a foolishly courageous hobbit and a plain piece of jewelry that is not as unremarkable as it seems?
Bilbo Baggins is about to find out when the consequences of a small mistake force him to realise that there are other threats and even greater forces of evil in the wide world of Middle Earth beyond the calamity of Smaug. So it comes that, having barely finished his first adventure, he embarks on another journey that will put his endurance and strength of will to the test in a way he's never experienced before - and suffice it to say that a magic ring that possesses something of an own personality does not make for a good travelling companion.

Summary
Bilbo nearly drowns and manages to hit his head and can suddenly hear the thoughts of people around them - but only when those people are thinking about him. That’s unfortunately bad news for Thorin who has been mentally waxing poetry about his brave little hobbit.
