Summary
She was young, he’d been right, and so small. She couldn’t have been much above five feet tall, and it certainly had been an odd sensation looking down at his new monarch. But there was a strength in her voice – a strength with a tremor, for sure, and a lot of fake confidence that anyone with any observational skills would see right through – but a strength that had surprised him, given her history. She hadn’t been completely cowed by Conroy, he thought a little triumphantly. There was a fire in her eyes, an eagerness to succeed, but a wariness. She couldn’t hide her fear, no matter how imperiously she looked at him, how high she held her chin.
Or, the one where Lord Melbourne becomes Private Secretary to a twenty-two-year-old Queen Victoria sometime in 2017.

Summary

Summary
He stares out at the trees, the land grey with the bitter hues of impending winter. The temperature had dropped considerably over the past week and the ground had transformed from a slushy mess to a frosty, slippery solid underfoot each morning, a sure sign that snow was on the way. Early this year, he thinks. Of course. Everything seemed to be going their way – finally – so why not ruin it with a little bit of snow at the start of November?
Snow meant Christmas. -

Summary

Summary
But this most recent letter? Oh, it reminded him of wide blue eyes and youthful naïveté and everything he’d loved about his role as Prime Minister. He smiles down at the page in front of him, filled with her softly looping letters and thoughts, and wonders why, all of a sudden, she should speak with such beautiful, youthful enthusiasm.

Summary
Maria is the one that puts his family back together, and at the end and beginning and in between everything he loves her most of all because she loved his children first.
Not at first, no, of course not; at first she is a nuisance, an inconvenience. At first she is the only thing available, because his children have scared away everyone else. At first, she is temporary, a girl meant to be a nun, a far too outspoken person for his liking.
But then, she brings back music to his life. And then; she leaves, and nothing is right anymore.
(Or: Georg falls in love with Maria slowly and all at once-- it just takes a while, music and honesty.)

Summary
One would think that having the name of one's soulmate appear on one's wrist on one's sixteenth birthday would make matrimony much less complicated. It mostly does not. And not at all for Miss Elizabeth Bennet of Longbourne.
(A deconstruction of the "soulmate identifying mark" trope, using "Pride and Prejudice." Trigger warnings in the tags.)

Summary
The Bowerbird wasn't playing fair; Jack couldn't debate these pieces of paper. He couldn't tell pieces of paper and a growing pile of feathers that he, too, remembered the rare treat that was eating a single piece of tropical fruit in the heavy heat of a Christmas afternoon, stickying his best suit of clothes, which had been so clean and pressed for church that morning.
(In which Inspector Jack Robinson is having a fairly uneventful year, divorce notwithstanding, until he acquires a lady doctor for a drinking buddy and receives a series of flirtatious notes from a jewel thief.)
