Summary
Jiang Yanli has spent years learning how to be quiet like a flower: a lotus on the still water, beautiful and invisible and all-hearing. Wen Qing, though, is quiet like a knife.
Wen Qing has heard tell that the Nie appreciate directness. “My family, the Dafan branch of the Wen clan, are under Wen Ruohan’s thumb against our will,” she says. “We have suffered at his hand. I would request the protection of the Nie - your authority as a shield for our elders and our children.”
It’s a tall order. They both know it.
Jiang Yanli learns the truth of Dafan during her time at the Cloud Recesses. Things go a little differently from there.
