    “What did Greg tell you?” John inquired, handing Rosie the rattle to keep her busy. She took it gladly, giddily shaking it against her dad’s shoulder. John ignored her.

    Sherlock frowned. “Pardon?”

    “What did he tell you after you asked him how Mycroft was?” John repeated, offhandedly dodging the rattle aiming for his face.

    “That he was a bit shaken up.”

    “Right. And?”

    Sherlock paused, swallowing the sudden uneasiness settling on his chest. “He’s Mycroft,” he murmured, almost to himself. “He’s never shaken up.”

     

    Or: after the events of Sherringford, Mycroft locks himself in his office. Greg worries, and asks Sherlock to check on him. The brothers have a much-needed talk. Uncomfortable emotions ensue.
    Featuring: Greg Lestrade being an awesome boyfriend, Anthea being scarily good at her job, Rosie being adorable and John being bullied over his tea-making skills.

    Effie spends her first years in Twelve, wondering how different her life would have been in the Capitol. Certainly, her hands would still be smooth and free of calluses, but she knows there would be bloody stains on her soul the longer she had stayed.

    Haymitch wonders if it would have been easier to fade into obscurity as Twelve's only victor finding solace at the bottom of the bottle or in a bed not his own. The arrival of the Capitol girl ruins his plans to fade away.

    Loneliness is a dangerous disease that infects them both, but time somehow finds a way to weave them together.

    Effie reached behind the cushion to his left - did Katniss imagine a slight pause by his cheek? - and drew out a little black box, made of crushed velvet and tied with the gold that had recently become something of an Effie signature.

    She leaned close to him, unusually close for a Capitol woman and a District man, and whispered a faint “Happy Birthday” into his ear.

    Somewhere within her, Katniss felt a dull ache. Haymitch was born on Reaping Day? There was a twisted poetry in that, a sort of cold destiny. Haymitch had to go through this every year on his birthday?

    No wonder the man drank himself to oblivion every 4th of July.
