Summary
Maybe it’s the moment Sirius feels Remus’ tongue with his own; his brain that has returned from its smoke break; or perhaps the piece of thread he gets his nail stuck on, but slowly — no faster than a sloth’s pace — Sirius realises what he’s doing.
It’s his eyes that are the first to fly open. His second action is to push himself violently away from Remus and take two large steps backwards, hitting the railing of the balcony, a sharp edge slicing into his bare lower back. A faucet of dread opens up inside of him and he feels it wash cold water down his ribcage.
Remus is staring at him. His eyes are wide and his lips are red and shiny; parted. Besides that his face is unreadable. He stands upright, stiff as a statue (how had Sirius not noticed that). He doesn’t move, not even to blink. Sirius raises his trembling hand to cover his mouth. Into it he whispers, “Oh God.” He hopes Remus can’t hear.

They move and stumble, try to dance, but often bump into each other or the ones around them. She yells something into his ear and Sirius is sure he didn't hear her, but for whatever reason it’s hilarious and he cackles loudly, throwing his head back. It could be hours or minutes since they’ve made their way onto the dance floor, Sirius wouldn’t know. It could be morning or night, tomorrow or yesterday. Nothing is certain.
