The cell was colder than Avid expected.
That was stupid of him to think. Obviously the cell he'd made specifically to house himself when—if he got turned would be cold, with his dead skin and still veins and numb limbs and the icy silver that inhabited it with him. Nothing about him was warm anymore—and it's not like he deserved to be. He'd chosen to die, to give up the shreds of humanity he'd been grasping at for years in hopes of a cure for himself just to end up dying. He was dead.
or, when Pyro finds Avid hiding in his jail cell, they decide he can't be trusted to navigate vampirism on his own and decides to be his mentor. Avid isn't particularly fond of this idea.

"B, shut up!" Jimmy whined, throwing his head back to get the hair out of his face—and for the drama, but he'd never admit that. "I want to see if this'll work."
"Like all the other times?" Bigb deadpanned, lazily floating in midair behind Jimmy as he worked. Worked might have been a strong word for what he was doing—digging through Bigb's grave for her coffin. "Dude, just give up."
or, Jimmy and Bigb try to figure out what happened when Bigb died. They're not good at it. They also get easily distracted.

A corpse in the shape of what could’ve been a home. Shadows drifting round the windows, a house that is not a house.
There is nothing here for her. Nothing at all.

He runs and runs, because all he has ever tried to do is survive. All he ever tried to do was keep himself and those around him alive.
He runs because he is terrified.
And just like it did for Pyro and Shelby, it starts for Martyn in Oakhurst—and ends on a beach.

“Stay back,” Martyn rasped. He meant to bark the order—instead, his words came out flimsy. He sounded tired; he sounded scared.
Owen considered him, head tilted. “It seems like I’m not the only one who has had a bad day.”

Faced with the reality of just how many people in Oakhurst have turned, Martyn panics and makes a big mistake. Oakhurst is met with a new development, potentially the scariest one yet, that leads them to reassess the severity of their situation. Owen seizes an opportunity to gain an asset and send a message.

Apo heaved a sigh, and Viking waited to hear the explanation of just precisely how stupid he was and how he was gonna get frostbite and lose all his fingers and wouldn't even be able to scroll TikTok anymore, but instead she used her teeth to yank off her left glove and shoved it into his chest without looking at him.
"Here," she grunted. "Now we'll both half freeze."
Viking thought he might cry, which would really suck with how cold and dehydrated he was. He didn't trust himself to say anything without bursting into tears, so for once he said nothing and just tugged on the glove and pressed his shoulder against hers as hard as he could. Her bare hand found his and he clung back with all the strength in his frozen fingers.
It could be worse, he thought, staring into the fire until his eyes stung for other reasons. At least we have each other.
