Summary
The year is 1780, and spoiled southern boy turned soldier Mon-El is unhappy and dissatisfied with his privileged but empty life. That is, until he meets a girl at his parents’ ball who changes everything. They understand each other perfectly, and with his parents pressuring him to marry, there would be no better match than her—except that they come from wildly different backgrounds. With a heavy heart, Mon-El walks away and takes a wife his family approves of.

Summary
His grief is so all-consuming that he does not feel the magical tingle in the air, does not see the shimmering gold swirling around him. He does not notice anything until suddenly, the beast’s body begins to lift underneath him. He falls back out of shock as the beast rises further and further into the air, ribbons of color and light surrounding him. And then things begin to change.
A paw into a hand. Fur into skin. A curved talon into a human foot. A tangled mane into silky hair.
The figure is facing away from him when the transformation ends, raising a hand and staring at it in wonder. The former beast finally turns around and Mon-El’s breath catches.
It is not the prince from the torn-up painting. It is not a man at all.
It is a woman.

“Nineteen, sir,” Dmitry answers dutifully. The man has a gun at his hip and a temper. Better not provoke him if he doesn’t want to end up with a bullet between the eyes.
“I take it you didn’t fight during the Great War.”
“I was locked at Tsarskoye Selo with all the other servants before I was of age,” he replies with what can only described as a mocking smirk. Then, after a pause, “sir.”(Dmitry is the kitchen boy in exil with the Romanovs. That's only the beginning of his story, if the end of theirs.)

Hey, Nia writes, typing fast so that she doesn't second-guess herself. Remember when you said I wasn't alone?
She hits send, watches the text message go from sending to sent and waits. Kara doesn't reply right away. Nia tries to be rational about it, tries to think about all the important things that Kara - or Supergirl - could be doing that don't involve answering a needy 11PM text message from her intern. How it's reasonable that maybe Kara messages her back in the morning or that they talk about it over coffee tomorrow, at work.
Kara replies at midnight, about ten minutes after Nia's given up on getting an answer and started to tuck herself into bed. Of course, her message reads. What do you need?
