Niko bounced out from behind Charles to hug Edwin instead, who pretended to suffer through it even though he’d opened his arms to catch her. “So.” Niko pulled back to look up at him, and glanced at Crystal too. “You guys don’t actually have plans for Friday, right? I thought we could have a love-in!”
Charles burst out laughing. “You can’t call it that! It sounds like an orgy!”
Niko, Charles, Crystal, and Edwin have all been roommates in some configuration before, but this is the first time they've all lived together as a foursome.

The corridor they walked down was carpeted, quiet in the way hotels were always quiet, the sound insulated and the air too close. Their room was right at the end, and Charles took a deep breath and let it out as he pressed the key to the reader, waited for the little whir and click and green light, and pushed the door open wide.

It was part of the game for Charles to grin and start driving before Edwin had buckled his seatbelt, just to make him squeak. Just like it was part of the game for Edwin to groan and say, “Oh God, please, Charles, please don’t,” as they approached a set of traffic lights that were just about to turn amber.
Charles gets his first car and discovers that his new favourite thing is to find the many and varied ways to make Edwin lose his cool in the passenger seat.

After dropping out of university, Niko makes a deal with her fairy goodparents so they leave her alone for a year and a day, and soon befriends Charles. Crystal arrives at St. Kitt's and immediately clashes with Edwin, who despises her right back. The boys have their own things going on while Niko grapples with her fairy heritage and Crystal tries to find her place in the world post-possession.
